Māori Language Week

For Māori Language Week 2017 we watched the video 'Say it Tika' made by Voadafone and starring Temuera Morrison. It was to highlight the fact that Google Maps often say our Māori place names incorrectly. We also notice that the place names around our West Coast are regularly said incorrectly so we have created a slideshow showing how to say them correctly.

We are going to screencastify it at a later date so people can hear the correct pronunciation.

Are the place names in your area pronounced correctly?

  1. Kia ora Te Hiringa,
I am SUPER impressed with the DLO you have created explaining Māori place names and am really looking forward to hearing your screencastify. I try really hard to pronounce our Aotearoa place names correctly. In Northland, just like the West Coast, we have heaps of names that aren't pronounced correctly. Even Whangarei is pronounced in so many different ways - lots of people say Wong-gar-ray! I think Vodafone and Google have come up with a super idea and I hope it helps other people learn to pronounce our very special Māori place names. Do you all know how to pronounce the place names correctly or did you have the help of the Māori dictionary or someone else?

  2. Kia ora. My name is Jasmine. This is a very nice slide. I can not even say most of these. Even with the pronunciation under it. I like how you have put something up for that special day not many people did. Just a question did your class do anything other than this otherwise this is great keep it up.

This slide is really cool and helpful because most of the people can't pronounce them properly I couldn't do it as well but when I saw this slide I pronounced it right.
